So, if you’re a regular reader of my blog, you probably know that I’m a freelance business writer by trade. You probably also know that I’m already back from my maternity leave, since I only planned to take two weeks off. Since baby is now 3 weeks old, I’ve officially been back to work for a week and a half now – and I’ve got some tips to share on how to get back to the freelancing life with baby in tow!
First, nursing one-handed IS possible. Not at first, mind you, but once you get the hang of things it can be done! This allows you to do some minor typing, check your email, and do light work while baby is pre-occupied. Of course, you don’t want to do this constantly – the bonding time with baby is *way* more important than sending off that email right now! But if there is urgent work that needs to be done, it is possible!
Second, working when baby sleeps is the best way to get things done! Yes, you also have housework and sleep of your own to attend to, but baby sleeping in even 1 hour increments can be enough to whip out a few articles or a blog post (like this!)
And third, you need to prioritize. Remember that your family is always number one, keeping your home is number two (after all, its hard to feel like getting dressed in the morning when you don’t have any clean clothes!) and work takes a backseat. Don’t feel guilty about not working if baby needs you, or you have to do a load of laundry. Set deadlines appropriately, make your clients aware if a family related problem comes up that will affect your work (trust me, most of them will understand) and remember to enjoy as much of this time as possible – you can never get it back!
